What is a monument? It’s tiny hands building a pile of sticks: “The time we played in the yard.” It’s ancient tears falling on stone structures declaring “We survived.” It’s structures towering high lest we forget. In ancient times, the Jewish people would erect monuments to remember significant moments. When they crossed the Jordan River in their escape from Egypt they brought with them stones from the river bank. Once across they arranged these stones in a sculpture of sorts as a memorial to the incredible feat. They did this often- made art as a way to acknowledge what had been accomplished. Their monuments acted as a reminder to future generations of what was possible; almost as if they knew that life doesn’t bring us to the edge of just one metaphorical Jordan River to cross. This peice if an ode to the monuments we build.
